Big Library Read

Join the fun! Big Library Read is the first-ever “global eBook club,” connecting readers around the world who read the same eBook at the same time. Over the past year, thousands of libraries, schools and millions of people around the world have embraced the program.

Here’s how it works: Program sponsor, OverDrive, teams with noted eBook publishers to make two popular eBooks available to public libraries and schools for lending. During the two-week program, the Big Library Read titles are available to borrow through participating libraries and schools. It’s free and there’s never a waiting list during the program. All you need is a library card or student ID to get started reading in this international eBook club.

Get your BPL e-card here to access the books!

Library Catalog

The library has a public access catalog for all our materials. Students and staff have access to their own accounts to place hold requests, make renewals, see what you have checked out, and look at your circulation history.

Students: use your e-mail address as their username and your local student ID (on the top of your schedule, under your name) as your password, but once logged in, you can change your password to something you will remember. See me if you're having trouble logging in.

Staff: use your e-mail address as your username and your first name and last name as your password (ex. erinklemm@wbschools.com, erinklemm). Once logged in, you can change your password if you would like. See me if you're having trouble logging in.

Another great feature of this system is that we have access to a network of libraries to share materials with. If we don't own a particular title, it's very likely that another library in the network does and we can order it! Items take about a week to arrive.

The new library catalog can be accessed here: http://wbmiddlehigh.masscat.org/

High School Summer Reading

Attention high school students! Below is information regarding this year's summer reading. All students entering 9th and 10th grade will read I Am Malala: The Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot by the Taliban by Malala Yousafzai. All students entering 11th and 12th grade will read The Promise of a Pencil: How an Ordinary Person Can Create Extraordinary Change by Adam Braun. Be prepared to discuss these titles during the first advisory of the 2015-2016 school year.

Feel free to view the following Prezi for more information about the books, authors, and next year's theme:

All students in grades 9 and 10 will read:

I Am Malala: The Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot by the Taliban by Malala Yousafzai

When the Taliban took control of the Swat Valley in Pakistan, one girl spoke out. Malala Yousafzai refused to be silenced and fought for her right to an education.

On Tuesday, October 9, 2012, when she was fifteen, she almost paid the ultimate price. She was shot in the head at point-blank range while riding the bus home from school, and few expected her to survive. Instead, Malala's miraculous recovery has taken her on an extraordinary journey from a remote valley in northern Pakistan to the halls of the United Nations in New York. At sixteen, she became a global symbol of peaceful protest and the youngest nominee ever for the Nobel Peace Prize.

I Am Malala will make you believe in the power of one person's voice to inspire change in the world.

All students in grades 11 and 12 will read:

The Promise of a Pencil: How an Ordinary Person Can Create Extraordinary Change by Adam Braun

Adam Braun began working summers at hedge funds when he was just sixteen years old, sprinting down the path to a successful Wall Street career. But while traveling he met a young boy begging on the streets of India, who after being asked what he wanted most in the world, simply answered, “a pencil.” This small request led to a staggering series of events that took Braun backpacking through dozens of countries before eventually leaving one of the world’s most prestigious jobs to found Pencils of Promise, the organization he started with just $25 that has since built more than 200 schools around the world.

The Promise of a Pencil chronicles Braun’s journey to find his calling, as each chapter explains one clear step that every person can take to turn your biggest ambitions into reality, even if you start with as little as $25.

Free audiobook downloads all summer!

SYNC is a program that gives away two complete audiobook downloads–a current Young Adult title paired thematically with a Classic or Required Summer Reading title–each week to listeners ages 13+ while SYNC is in session each summer.

Titles are delivered through the OverDrive app. You can prepare for the program by downloading the software to whichever device you anticipate listening on. SYNC is dedicated to introducing the listening experience to the young adult audience and demonstrates that Required Reading can be completed by listening.
In 2015, 28 titles will be given away over 14 weeks starting May 7th through August 13th. Once you download the titles, they are yours to keep! Download your copies here.

MSLA Bookmark Contest

Every year, the Massachusetts School Library Association (MSLA) hosts a bookmark contest for students in grades K - 12 to celebrate school libraries and the programs and services they offer. Students are invited to design a bookmark around a theme chosen by the MSLA. This year's theme is "Look what I discovered at my school library!". While designing your bookmark, think about the following questions:

  • What new and exciting things have you been doing at your school library?
  • How has your librarian helped your school library to keep up with the 21st century?
  • What has been your favorite experience?
  • What makes our library special?
Think about the other things our library offers besides books; the 3D printer, online and electronic resources, a Makerspace, interlibrary loan from area libraries, access to e-books, and more.

See Mrs. Klemm or Ms. Zell to pick up an entry form or click here to print one from home! Entries must be submitted to Mrs. Klemm by January 30, 2015.
