Students in grades six through eight are required to choose one book to read from the master list below. Middle school teachers and administrators will also read one of these choices. When we return to school in the fall, each teacher will host a book discussion group for students who have read that particular selection. This model seeks to encourage students to read for the sake of reading, involve teachers across content areas, and cross grade levels to group students in discussion groups. While reading your chosen book, please fill out the attached sheet and be prepared to share during the book discussion groups.

We’re mixing things up a bit this year! Listening to a story and reading a story do have lots of similarities. There are also lots of benefits to listening, including the fact that research shows students can listen to content two to three grade levels higher than they can read. Listening is also a huge part of the Common Core and a standard that we under-utilize. Serial will be a means to an end, and students who get invested in this story will have lots of opportunities to read and further their knowledge, whether it is the long Reddit strands, follow up interviews, or other crime non-fiction stories, there are lots of places we can point our readers to.
The library has a public access catalog for all our materials. Students and staff have access to their own accounts to place hold requests, make renewals, see what you have checked out, and look at your circulation history.

Students: use your e-mail address as their username and your local student ID (on the top of your schedule, under your name) as your password, but once logged in, you can change your password to something you will remember. See me if you're having trouble logging in.

Staff: use your e-mail address as your username and your first name and last name as your password (ex. erinklemm@wbschools.com, erinklemm).

Another great feature of this system is that we have access to a network of libraries to share materials with. If we don't own a particular title, it's very likely that another library in the network does and we can order it! Items take about a week to arrive.

On Tuesday, October 9, 2012, when she was fifteen, she almost paid the ultimate price.

Adam Braun began working summers at hedge funds when he was just sixteen years old, sprinting down the path to a successful Wall Street career. But while traveling he met a young boy begging on the streets of India, who after being asked what he wanted most in the world, simply answered, “a pencil.” This small request led to a staggering series of events that took Braun backpacking through dozens of countries before eventually leaving one of the world’s most prestigious jobs to found Pencils of Promise, the organization he started with just $25 that has since built more than 200 schools around the world.

The Promise of a Pencil chronicles Braun’s journey to find his calling, as each chapter explains one clear step that every person can take to turn your biggest ambitions into reality, even if you start with as little as $25.

Students are invited to design a bookmark around a theme chosen by the MSLA. This year's theme is "Look what I discovered at my school library!". While designing your bookmark, think about the following questions:

What new and exciting things have you been doing at your school library?

How has your librarian helped your school library to keep up with the 21st century?

What has been your favorite experience?

What makes our library special?

Think about the other things our library offers besides books; the 3D printer, online and electronic resources, a Makerspace, interlibrary loan from area libraries, access to e-books, and more.

See Mrs. Klemm or Ms. Zell to pick up an entry form or click here to print one from home! Entries must be submitted to Mrs. Klemm by January 30, 2015.

Inaugurated by the Academy of American Poets in 1996, National Poetry Month is now held every April, when schools, publishers, libraries, booksellers, and poets throughout the United States band together to celebrate poetry and its vital place in American culture.

There are poems posted around the school by a variety of poets on many different topics. Take a minute to stop and read some of the poems- you might discover one that you really love! I've posted my personal favorite just outside the Media Center door- let me know what you think.

The Media Center has a large poetry section covering an array of emotions- happy, sad, funny, melancholy, love, despair, and more. Come in and discover the world of poetry!
Boston’s baseball history began in 1871 with the formation of the Boston Red Stockings (also known as the Americans and the Braves along the way). Though the Braves left Boston, first for Milwaukee and later for Atlanta, the Red Sox have stayed true to their local roots, remaining an enormously popular Boston fixture and giving birth to the Red Sox Nation.

The Boston Public Library has collected a wide variety of baseball-related memorabilia. While much of this collection contains print materials and must be seen in person, many images and memorabilia have been made available digitally in the past few years. A selection of photos have been displayed in the Media Center. Want to see more?
